“Travel is the
only thing you buy that makes you richer.”
It is with
belief that I have been traveling around the world for more than a decade to
over 50 countries and this is my first post about jet leg which I have faced numerous
times during travelling. My initial travel experiences were all clouded with
jet lag issues owing to visits to different cities in varying time zones always
that always affected my body clock. This is no alien concept and I am sure that
every traveler has to face this issue during some or the other travel. However,
experience has certainly made me wiser and I am now a happy traveler😊 as I have
learnt how to deal with jet lags the hard way!
Here I share a few basic things that you can do to
alleviate this problem and enjoy your travel to the fullest.
- Pick A Flight That Arrives Late
When you are
booking your flight tickets, make sure that you choose ones that arrive closer
to sleep hours. I do so because disembark, head to my hotel, take a shower, hit
the bed and get up all fresh in the morning to kick start my day! Also, you
must try not sleeping too much while on the plane, though napping is one of the
best things you can do! It is always easier for your body to adjust to new time
zones if it is awake rather than asleep!
- Stick to Your Destination’s Local Time
This is another
hack that I find really useful for air travel. To start with, you need to set
your watch while on flight to the local time of your destination. Secondly,
your body may scream for sleep and food as soon as you land. But you need to do
these as per local schedules. Eat and sleep when the locals do so that your
body gets used to the new time table faster. Also, avoid eating too much on
your flight so that your appetite is intact when you land. It takes me not more
than ⌚24 hours to tune my body to new time settings!
- Keep Yourself Hydrated
Drink as much
water as possible whenever you taking long flights to avoid the sleepiness. You
can also have some juices if you like, but water is what I recommend most. Have
a water bottle with you, refill it every time and consume as much as you can.
- Exercise As Much As Possible
I know this
sounds a little difficult while you are aboard a flight. But this really helps
your body stay up and awake. Try and walk around the aisle in your aircraft or
do some seat exercises as this shall keep the blood circulation in your body
going and help you combat jet lags with minim fatigue. I simply flex my legs
while on my seat or do some stretching 💪exercises in open areas if not anything
more at least every hour!
- Completely Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine
These are two
things that I completely avoid on long haul flights. Initially I would indulge
in generous cups of 🍵coffee and alcohol to relax, believing that they would help
me stay awake and adjust to new time zones in an easier manner. But I was wrong
because I ended up with more caffeine that actually messed up with my sleep
schedules.
All our lives
are incomplete without travel. Long or short, personal or professional, make
sure that you set out to different lands to enhance your life. Jet lags are
common and can be handled with ease no matter which part of the world you are
traveling to. Keep the above hacks in mind, enrich your mind, body and soul as
you experience and explore different lands!
